Turning Community Data Into a Viable Energy Infrastructure Investment
Sasol Energy needed more than a site assessment. They needed proof that the communities, the governance structures, and the business model could all hold the weight of long-term infrastructure investment. We built that proof.
The Problem
In June 2023, Sasol Energy initiated the planned rollout of Integrated Energy Centres (IECs) in Limpopo and Mpumalanga. The assignment required a comprehensive socio-economic diagnostic and business model review to provide the strategic insights needed to guide investment decisions, strengthen operational sustainability, and maximise community impact.
The Engagement
Our work focused on two key areas:
Socio-Economic Diagnostic
- Conducted a detailed socio-economic assessment for the Nkomazi Local Municipality, Mpumalanga.
- Analysed demographic, economic, social, and infrastructure indicators to determine the suitability of the area for a potential Integrated Energy Centre.
- Identified community needs, development priorities, and opportunities for local economic participation linked to the proposed IEC.
Integrated Energy Centre Business Model Review
- Assessed the existing IEC business model with a focus on long-term sustainability and operational effectiveness.
- Evaluated governance structures, accountability mechanisms, and cooperative management practices.
- Developed recommendations to strengthen the financial viability, governance, and community ownership of existing and future IECs.
The Client Benefits
The project provided Sasol Energy with evidence-based insights to support strategic decision-making and future investments in Integrated Energy Centres.
Key benefits included:
- A refined and strengthened business model that enhanced the viability and sustainability of future IEC investments.
- Practical recommendations for improving governance, accountability, and cooperative performance.
- A comprehensive understanding of the socio-economic conditions within Nkomazi Municipality to inform site selection and service offerings.
- Identification of community priorities and complementary services that could be incorporated into the IEC model to maximise local socio-economic impact.
- Enhanced decision-making capability for future energy infrastructure investments and community development initiatives.
The study enabled Sasol Energy to make informed investment decisions regarding the expansion of Integrated Energy Centres, while ensuring that future facilities are responsive to local community needs, economically sustainable, and supported by robust governance structures.
